چکیده

14 There is increasing interest in the use of continuous housing systems for dairy cows, 15 with various reasons put forward to advocate such systems. However, the welfare of 16 dairy cows is typically perceived to be better within pasture-based systems, although 17 such judgements are often not scientifically based. The aim of this review was to 18 interrogate the existing scientific literature to compare the welfare, including health, 19 of dairy cows in continuously housed and pasture-based systems. While 20 summarising existing work, knowledge gaps and directions for future research are 21 also identified. The scope of the review is broad, examining relevant topics under 22 three main headings; health, behaviour, and physiology. Regarding health, cows on 23 pasture-based systems had lower levels of lameness, hoof pathologies, hock 24 lesions, mastitis, uterine disease, and mortality compared to cows on continuously 25

Sward Factors Influence on Pasture Dry Matter Intake of Grazing Dairy Cows: A Review

Successful pasture-based milk production systems pivot on balancing dairy cows’ feed requirements with seasonal and annual fluctuations in pasture production. In order to maximise cow production from grazing dairy systems, it is necessary to reach an efficient utilization of grazed grass for feeding cows and the development of appropriate grazing management systems designed to maximize daily pa...

Effect of Dietary and Animal Factors on Milk Fatty Acids Composition of Grazing Dairy Cows: A Review

In pasture-based milk production systems, using available farm resources in order to reduce feeding costs, the composition and functional properties of dairy cows’ milk are of considerable importance to the dairy farmer, manufacturer and consumer. Basically, there are three options for altering the composition and/or functional properties of milk: 1) cow nutrition and grazing management, 2) cow...

Animal Factors Condition Milk Performance and Quality of Grazing Dairy Cows

The base of this review is to consider the relevant role that animal factors (potential milk yield, body weight, body condition score, state of lactation, parity and fertility) play on milk performance (considering the energy balance and the rumen function across the full lactation curve of animals) and milk quality (milk protein content, milk fat content, milk lactose content, vitamins, minera...

Preference and behavior of lactating dairy cows given free access to pasture at two herbage masses and two distances.

A number of factors influence dairy cow preference to be indoors or at pasture. The study reported here investigated whether herbage mass and distance affects preference and if continuously housed cows exhibited behavioral and production differences compared to cows that had free access to pasture. Dairy cows (n = 16) were offered a free choice of being in cubicle housing (1.5 cubicles/cow) or ...

Prepartum Lying Behavior of Holstein Dairy Cows Housed on Pasture through Parturition

Utilizing pasture-based systems may increase cow comfort during late gestation and calving as it lacks the constraints of confinement housing. The objective of this study was to quantify lying behavior and activity of Holstein dairy cows housed on pasture during the 6 d before calving. Sixteen Holstein dairy cows were moved to pasture 3 weeks before their projected calving date. Data loggers we...
